Visionary Leadership and The Enneagram: Questions to support each Enneagram Type in becoming a better leader.
There is so much uncertainty in the world about so many things. We are still walking through the domino effects of a global pandemic, witnessing wars that don’t have easy resolutions, watching racial justice struggle to take hold, feeling the frustration of political division, and seeing the effects of climate change. And so much more.
Perhaps we can all agree that this world need some visionary leadership.
Perhaps you are hoping to be one of those leaders, or perhaps you are looking for some good leaders to follow. In either case, Enneagram can help us think about visionary leadership from a different angle.
Any Enneagram Type can be a visionary leader. Any Enneagram Type can struggle to be a visionary leader.
Here are some visionary leadership questions to think about, with one strength and one growing edge for each type.
Type 1:
How might my desire to reform and make things better keep me focused on creating a better future?
How might my high standards affect my ability to celebrate the incremental steps we are making towards a vision in the here and now?
Type 2:
How might my people-orientation push us towards vision that is attuned to benevolence not just success?
How might my passion for receiving affirmation for how I have met needs hinder me from working towards a greater good that might not garner me such specific praise?
Type 3:
How might my achievement orientation help push everyone around me towards what is possible?
How might my drive to accomplish hold me back from a vision that is beyond what I can do?
Type 4:
How might my desire for beauty and understanding bring a unique vision for the corporate good?
How might my shame about the past keep me away from a futuristic orientation?
Type 5:
How might my collection of information help me compile a broad vision from a wide base?
How might my desire to have all the steps figured out cause slowness in moving towards the future?
Type 6:
How might my inclination towards objectivity and preparedness help the team set goals that are achievable and measurable?
How might seeing the things that could go wrong be keeping me from seeing the things that could go right?
Type 7:
How might my natural orientation towards the future help me cast vision to others about the possibilities of where we could go?
How might my desire to have variety hinder me from moving towards a specific vision?
Type 8:
How might my strength push myself and those around me towards what is possible?
How might my desire to chart my course make it hard for me to see what we need to chart for our course?
Type 9:
How might my ability to see all sides lead to a vision that hopes for the greater good for all?
How might my strong connection to keeping peace in the present day hold me back from thinking about and moving into a new future?
How can you use these questions and more to have curiosity about yourself, gain in clarity about what you are doing and why, grow in compassion towards yourself and others, and have more effective collaboration with those around you?
